SpyNoMore Review    By Tom Armstrong

A decent spyware tool that offers basic protection and is easy enough to use. Runs without hogging all available PC resources. SpyNoMore is not without it's flaws though.

What does this software do? SpyNoMore scans your computer and hunts down any spyware that might be infecting it. After performing a scan it will show a list of the threats on your PC. You can then click a button to remove these problems.
Buying notes The credit card payments for this product are handled by a company called Clickbank. They are a huge company with a track record spanning many years and offer excellent customer support. I've bought many products through this company and never had any problems.
First impressions Installing SpyNoMore was super-easy and didn't require a restart. After starting it up, the first job at hand was an automatic update. This was also quick and easy to do. The interface window is straight forward enough, if a little dull. And it's also fully resizable - which so many tools neglect. Within seconds, I'd launched into a full scan.
Realtime protection SpyNoMore offers realtime protection under the name of Active Protection. There's a separate window that lets you check the status of your level of protection, and vaccinate your PC against common malware threats. Compared to other tools, the level of protection is fairly basic however.
Product updates Updates for this product seem fairly regular, if not as often as the top tools. I was able to get definition updates at least a few times each week.
Customer Support Support for SpyNoMore is available via a helpdesk system. I normally prefer email but they do promise that it's manned 24/7. I was able to get my questions answered easily enough with this system.
What I liked Very simple, easy to use interface

All aspects of the interface here are very easy to use. There's a simple menu along the top for the help files, while the tools are aligned down the left. It's a minimal view and it works really well. The ability to resize the window is a huge plus and all of the fonts are very easy view.

Great reporting window

The scan results window had some nice features. When you move the pointer over each threat that the scan has found you get a simple description of what this problem is. You can also do this while the scan is running.

Scans run quickly, in the background

If, like me, you've got better things to do than sit and watch a spyware scan taking place, then this is a great tool. Unlike most of it's competitors, it will happily run the scan while you work on other things. Without hogging so much of your system that things get really slow and bogged down. I couldn't notice any difference in performance when SpyNoMore was running.

Easy to select all your drives

The scan window lets you perform a quick scan or an in-depth one on all of your drives, or just one of them.
What I didn't like No progress complete bar

There's a space at the bottom of the screen where this could have easily been inserted. Instead you get a running list of which file it's currently up to. Not very helpful really.

No indication of the severity of each threat

This is another pretty obvious oversight. In the results window you can see the name of the spyware, the category and where it was found. But there's no indication as to how severe it is, beyond the text explanation of each item. It would have been better to have a graphic for 'minor' and 'major' threats.

'Rogue Security Software' warning

If you've got other spyware removal tools on your PC, it's likely that they'll be picked up AS spyware. And listed under a category for 'Rogue Security Software'. Obviously removing these programs with SpyNoMore will stop them working. A slightly deceptive way to wipe out their competitors.

Settings are too basic

The settings tab covers both the program options and the scheduler. Both leave a lot to be desired, especially when compared with some of the other tools I've been reviewing. The one small window does not offer much in the way of customization. Whereas other programs have many different screens. There's not much depth to SpyNoMore.

Couldn't scan mapped network drives

This might be a quirk on our test computer, but SpyNoMore didn't seem to be able to scan mapped network drives. This is something other spyware software just didn't have a problem with. And it's an important feature.
Strengths
  • Easy to use
  • Great reporting window with info on each threat
  • Scan runs quickly in the background
  • Select all your drives easily
Weaknesses
  • No progress bar
  • Dull graphics and design
  • No indication of threat level
  • Settings section way too basic
  • Didn't pick up mapped network drives
The verdict SpyNoMore is a decent enough spyware removal tool with a good scanning engine. The scan runs quickly, without hogging all of your PC's resources. And it offers some built in resident protection - even if it is fairly basic. Although the detection of 'rogue security software' (it's competitors) is misleading. And a couple of simple graphical extras wouldn't have gone a miss. For the same price, there's better tools on the market.
