Spyware Nuker Review    By Tom Armstrong

On the whole, Spyware Nuker has a lot going for it. The scanning engine and realtime protection are 1st class. A few problems hold it back, along with it's hefty price tag.

What does this software do? Spyware Nuker scans your computer and hunts down any spyware that's found it's way on there. After performing a scan it will show a list of the threats on your PC. You can then click a button to remove these problems.
Buying notes The credit card payments for this product are handled by a company called Clickbank. They are a huge company with a track record spanning many years and offer excellent customer support. I've bought many products through this company and never had any problems.
First impressions Starting up, Spyware Nuker has a strong, professional look and feel. It's interface is well designed and it's very easy to access all the functions. You can resize the window to fit your screen. And the text is easy to read. Familiar looking tabs make accessing the different areas of the tool quick and easy.
Real time protection I was very pleased with the realtime protection offered by Spyware Nuker. The software resides quietly in your system tray and looks for any incoming spyware threats. The Tools menu, on the main panel, allows you to customize this protection if you want to. It will monitor browser hijacks and suspicious program execution. It also protects against malicious cookies and messenger service pop-ups.
Product updates Definition updates for Spyware Nuker are not as frequent as I'd like them to be. Whereas some other tools update their definitions on an almost daily basis (more frequent is better), updates to this product seemed to be more on a weekly basis.
Customer Support Hmm, I've been unable to get a reply from customer support with regards to some simple questions I had. I will try again and update this section if and when they get back to me.
What I liked Scan all drives quickly and easily

Missing from a lot of tools, there's a quick and easy window to select drives, including mapped network drives. This is great news if you've got more than one hard drive in your computer or want to scan external drives or network drives.

Internal backups

One of the tabs I thought was a great inclusion was the Restore tab. This allows the user to restore any changes they make thanks to an intuitive backup system. Backups are automatic, and the software also sets restore points for added peace of mind. Any changes you make with Error Nuker are easily undone.

Good description of each threat's level

This is a real plus for any spyware tool. You can see a simple threat level of 'Low', 'Medium' and 'Severe' for each item discovered during the scan. There's also a good description of what each threat is and what it can do. These are relatively easy to understand and well worth reading.

Schedule scans to run at any time

Also in the tools menu is the Scheduler. This enables you to set the software to scan your PC on a regular basis to make sure it's free from spyware. It's very easy to set.
What I didn't like No indication of the length of the scan

This is another tool that neglects to have any way to see how long is left to run on a scan. Again, not a massive problem as most users will likely leave it running in the background and not sit and watch it, but it's a feature that should have been included.

No renewal plan

I don't trust tools that offer a lifetime membership. There's no incentive here for companies to update their spyware definition database and it's just not workable. Spyware software relies totally on the software's database being up to date and it's not realistic to expect updates week after week for free.

No link for quick update on main panel

I think this was the only tool that doesn't have a simple link to 'update now' on it's main panel. Instead, you'll have to click through to the settings screen, then click on a tab at the top of the page before you'll be given the 'Check Now' button. This problem is slightly offset by the automatic check for updates that the software makes when you run it. But it's still an important feature that should be more accessible.
Strengths
  • Offers a good level of realtime protection
  • Makes backups of all changes
  • Easy to scan all drives
  • Makes internal backups & restore points
  • Each threat's severity is clearly stated
  • Built in scheduler
Weaknesses
  • Database definition updates were not frequent enough
  • Customer support didn't reply to emails
  • No indication of the length of the scan
  • $10 more expensive than most tools in this sector
  • No payment plan for updates
  • No quick way to update the software once it's running
The verdict Spyware Nuker is by no means a bad tool. It's spyware scanning engine and realtime protection are top notch. The main panel is also well thought out (apart from the missing 'update' button). And there's some depth to the software too - with a number of useful tools and plenty of settings to keep more experienced PC users happy. It's held back by slow email support and could use more frequent definition updates. And on top of this, it's asking a higher price than competing tools.
